I would like to know if you planned the developpment of the story right from the beginning of the writing of the book or if the story developped himself during the process of writing the book. Hi Patrick! Thanks for your questions. When I started coming of Age, all I had in mind were the 3 characters: Ruthie, AJ and Erika. Ruthie's the character who is probably the most like me, but now, looking at the book years later, I think I like Erika the best--I think she went through a lot of growth as a person.
I was 18 when I wrote the book, and I didn't have any writing "training" beyond what I learned in school and what I liked to read. I liked to read books that had characters I could relate to. By that I mean people who were complex, who had strengths and weaknesses and insecurities just like I did. I didn't really know what would happen when I sat down to write. That's the "magical" part of writing. I believe that characters can tell their own stories. For example, I had no idea when I started out that little Anthony (AJ's brother) would play such an important role in the story. He just kept showing up and wouldn't go away! I also didn't plan on Erika and Ruthie getting into a fight, or what would happen to Erika after that.
